### A Technical Walkthrough of Our Golden Virginia Absolute

Two weeks ago, in our lab in Chiang Mai, I stood over a pot of shredded tobacco going from gold to deep brown under an immersion mixer. It's a smell most perfumers know from a bottle: hay, stewed fruit, honeyed sweetness, but almost none of us ever see the leaf get there. So here's the process, in more chemical detail than I'd normally put in a caption.

### The material: Nicotiana tabacum, flue-cured

What we're extracting is the "Golden Virginia" leaf type, flue-cured, meaning the leaves are dried under controlled warm airflow rather than sun- or air-cured over months. Flue-curing is fast (days, not weeks) and it's what gives Virginia tobacco its characteristic gold-to-amber color and higher residual sugar content compared to darker, longer-fermented types like Latakia or Kentucky. That sugar retention matters downstream: it's a large part of why a Virginia-type absolute reads honeyed and fruity rather than smoky or leathery. Chlorophyll breaks down during curing, the green disappears, and the leaf's characteristic hay-and-tobacco note starts forming before extraction even begins.

Our leaves are hand-harvested in Northern Thailand, in the Jan–Mar window, from partner farms we work with directly.

### Hand-stripping: lamina vs. midrib

Before extraction, every leaf is stripped by hand over a metal comb to separate the lamina (the flat, fragrant leaf body) from the central midrib. The rib is lignified plant tissue, mechanically tough, chemically closer to wood than to leaf, 

and it dilutes both extraction yield and the final scent profile without adding anything useful. This is manual, leaf-by-leaf, and slow. It's also non-negotiable if you want a clean material rather than a rougher, greener one: what goes into the extraction vat should be almost entirely lamina.

### Solvent extraction: leaf to concrete

The stripped lamina is shredded to maximize surface area, then extracted with a volatile hydrocarbon solvent (hexane is the industry-standard choice for this material, and what we use). Hexane is non-polar, which is exactly the point: it pulls out waxes, resins and the fat-soluble aromatic fraction while leaving most of the leaf's water-soluble content behind.

The tobacco is left to macerate under agitation for hours; the solvent goes from clear to a deep reddish-brown as it loads up with the leaf's extractable fraction. It's then filtered off the spent plant matter and evaporated under controlled conditions until every trace of solvent is gone. What's left is the **concrete**: a dark, waxy, semi-solid paste — the intermediate, not the finished material.

### The nicotine question

This comes up in almost every conversation I have with a buyer about tobacco absolute, so it's worth addressing directly and correctly. Nicotine is one of the major components of standard tobacco absolute, not a trace leftover — and that's exactly why the material carries a "Danger" hazard classification (H301 toxic if swallowed, H310 fatal in contact with skin, H226 flammable). This isn't specific to us: it's the standard classification for tobacco absolute as a material class.

Denicotinized tobacco absolute does exist as a distinct product — Biolandes, for one, sells "Tabac Déco" and "Tabac Dénicotinisé" as two separate references — but that's a deliberate additional processing step on top of the base extraction, not something a standard hexane/ethanol process removes on its own. Whether our Golden Virginia absolute is offered in a denicotinized version is a fair question from a buyer and one I want to answer with a confirmed number rather than a guess, so treat that specific point as pending on my end for now.

On the regulatory side: tobacco absolute (CAS 8037-19-2) currently carries **no IFRA restriction under the 51st Amendment**, and no allergens under current labelling rules. So the material is compliant to use; the hazard classification is a handling and labelling matter (COAs, safety data sheets, workplace handling), not a usage-limit one.

### Concrete to absolute: the ethanol wash

The concrete isn't the end state — it still carries a heavy wax load that would make it unworkable and unstable in a finished fragrance. The classic next step, and the one we'll walk through in a future post with photos, is an ethanol wash: the concrete is dissolved in ethanol, chilled to precipitate out the heavy waxes (the same polyprenol-type compounds, solanesol among them, that give raw tobacco leaf its slightly tacky surface feel), and cold-filtered. What remains in solution, once the ethanol is removed, is the **absolute** — a dark brown, viscous liquid to semi-solid material, and the form that actually goes into a perfumer's formula.

### Reading the profile back into the chemistry

The finished profile, sun-dried hay and dry grass up front, a heart of stewed prunes and dried apricot, a clean honeyed tobacco finish, isn't incidental. The hay-and-grass character comes largely from the curing stage, where chlorophyll degrades and cell-wall carbohydrates start to caramelize under heat. The fruity, prune-and-apricot heart is consistent with ester and Maillard-type reaction products that build during flue-curing's sugar-amino acid interactions: the same family of reactions responsible for a lot of “cooked fruit” character in cured and toasted plant materials generally. And because Virginia is a lighter, shorter cure than the more heavily fermented dark tobaccos, the harsher phenolic, leathery, smoky notes typical of Latakia-type absolutes stay muted here. That's a cultivar-and-process outcome, not a stylistic choice made at the extraction stage.
